My Chincoteague Totems are necklaces. All are made of found objects such as sea shells, bone, stone, seaglass with semi-precious and decorative stones and beads. Almost all include a natural pearl and some horse hair. These items are woven onto long leather thongs and hung in a special place as a memory of this island or easily slipped over your head to wear as a necklace.
The first one I made, for myself, started with pendant that was a gift. To it were added my horse's tooth, mane hair, a pearl, child's charm, wampum shell, things meaningful to me, when I am not wearing it, it hangs in the kitchen where I can see it. In turn, I encourage you to add to your totem what you find meaningful!
